Abstract:

Hadzia pachypoda n. sp., which inhabits the interstitial and phreatical freshwaters of northern Somalia is described. According to the morphology of this new species it results that (i) the genus Hadzia S. Karaman, 1932 must divided into the subgenera Hadzia s. str. and Metaniphargus Stephensen, 1933, and (ii) the genera Liagoceradocus J. L. Barnard, 1965 and Metahadzia Stock, 1977 are synonymous with Hadzia s. str. This is the first time that Hadzia has been recorded in Africa.
New data on the genus Afridiella G. S. Karaman & J. L. Barnard, 1979 are also given. Afridiella somala (Ruffo, 1970) has been found in wells located midway in the Uebi Scebeli basin (right side), 50-130 km north of the typical locality. Afridiella pectinicauda n. sp. has been discovered on the left side of the Uebi Scebeli river. It is easily distinguished from other Afridiella by the longer and thinner legs and antennae, and other aspects of the buccal apparatus.
