Abstract:

A new cave-dwelling austral genus of Bogidiellidae; Patagongidiella n. g., from northeastern Patagonia (Neuquen Province, Argentina). Two sympatric species of Patagongidiella n. g.: P. mauryi n. sp. and P. danieli n. sp. were discovered in the superficial sediments of the lagoons from two close by and possibly connected caves: “caverna del Arenab” and “caverna El Gendarme” in Neuquen Province, Argentina (38°37' S 70°23' W).
Patagongidiella has coxal plates slightly wider than tall, the 5th and 6th with well developed anterior lobe. Accessory flagellum of antenna I with three segments, molar area of the mandibles with conical shape and mandibular palp with three segments, the second one more expanded. Palp of maxilla I with two segments, external lobe with strong spines with serrated edges; internal lobe with three strong, feathered setae. Three pairs of coxal gills with internal spiral structure. Four mediosternal organs (with respiratory function?) in the sternal parts of segments 4-7. Gnathopods with a crenulated groove on the external palmar edge. With or without modifications in pleopod II ♂ and uropod I ♂.
Differences between the two species are the modification of the feathered setae on the exopodite of pleopod II ♂ and of one spine on the basipodite of uropod I ♂, observed in P. danieli.
In the scheme of Stock (1981) the new genus is considered as a plesiomorphic sister group of the set formed by Bogidiella, Actogidiella and Marigidiella. An apomorphic character, the presence of mediosternal organs on 4th-7th segments (character 10 ') distinguishes Patagongidiella from the other genera.
Patagongidiella is distinct from all other bogidiellid species known from South America, which belong to Bogidiella Hertzog. Its distribution is the southernmost of the group on the South American continent: south of rio Colorado, territory possibly of allochthonous origin.
